Modern Crosses

I finished up this quilt about a year ago and failed to take final pictures of it. Lots of scrappy low volume lights for the background with pops of bold colors for the crosses - most of which I believe are Free Spirit prints.

The pattern is called Modern Crosses out of the Modern Log Cabin Quilting: 25 Simple Quilts and Patchwork Projects by Susan Beal. I wasn't thrilled with the instructions - I ended up just making up my own pattern/cutting instructions, but in the end, I love this quilt.

I quilted a bunch of straight lines with random distances from each other - love the modern look it added to this quilt. Also love the yellow butterflies for the backing and the black and white stripes for the binding - just the perfect finishing touches for this one.

Will be finding a place to hang this one up in our home.

Simple Patchwork - The Girl Edition

The boy version turned out so cute, I HAD to make a girl version.

I just love simple patchwork...especially in low volume prints, with pops of brightness.

These are just 4" finished squares. Finished size is 32x40.

Binding and backing....turned out perfect!

And my very reliable photo bomber...

Simple Patchwork

Sometimes simple is best...especially when it uses up scraps!

Been loving all the simple patchwork quilts that have been popping up lately on Instagram and in the blog universe...particularly those that use low-volume prints.

This one uses 4" finished squares, so it measures somewhere around 32x40...makes a great baby quilt and only needs one yard of backing fabric =)

This little quilt is a gift for a co-worker who is expecting a boy in the fall. Working on a girl version as well for another co-worker.

Modern Crosses

I was having a bad day, well really, a bad week. What's a girl to do but go on a little fabric splurge!? I went to one of my favorite LQS, and ended up heading home with this little bundle of joy.

I didn't really have anything in mind when I was picking these fabrics, other than I wanted to try to play with the concept of low volume/low definition prints with some rich/bold prints. When I got home, I was going through some books and magazines and saw this little gem:

Perfect. So I decided to begin Modern Crosses from Modern Log Cabin Quilting. They are sort of like the plus quilts that have been popular as of recently, but a little fatter and better I think. I began with making a few blocks to see how they would turn out.

Love. LOVE. L-O-V-E!

And here are the 14 together I have completed so far.

Not sure how big I'm going to make this. The pattern in the book is for an 80x80 quilt, which is pretty big. I'm not sure I want to go that big. I'm going to make at least 42 blocks, so a 54x63 size throw (9" finished block size), and then see if I want to go any bigger.

Happy Quilting!
